Who should I bet on in the Welsh Grand National?

Last year’s winner Elegant Escape is the hot favourite once again, but Templegate is keen to swerve him this year and is opting for The Two Amigos.

“The Two Amigos is a proper stayer who travelled well when third in the Southern National at Fontwell last time. He was just getting going that day and the longer distance of this challenge will bring out the best in him.

“The handicapper has been fair by leaving his mark alone and he can hit the podium at tasty odds.

“Last year’s winner Elegant Escape is the class act in the race and he ran a cracker when carting top weight in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury last month. He was just two lengths off the pace in third and loves to get his toe in.

“He has even more lead in the saddle this time around but his quality can carry him home.

“Staying will be the name of the game today and Potters Corner goes like the Duracell bunny. He won the Midlands National at Uttoxeter in chronic ground earlier this year and tuned up by winning around here over hurdles.

“That has stopped his handicap mark from going any higher and he’s a contender.

“Truckers Lodge has been popular in the betting and with good reason after winning nicely here last time out in October. He shapes as though he’ll enjoy going even further and he has plenty of improvement to come.

“Captain Chaos is another to appeal at a big price after a good second at Newcastle last time in the mud. West Approach isn’t the easiest of rides but has gone well at Cheltenham a couple of times this season and shapes like a proper stayer.

“This is a tough race for Now McGinty to make his handicap chase debut but he was a good second in a Sandown Listed contest on comeback and has more to offer.”
