The Bears finished second to Maggie Walker in the team standings.

Barnett won the state championship in both the discus (151-08) and shot put (54-3).

Avery Jenkins placed third in the high jump (6-2). The Bears also got points from Jacob Mullins, who was fourth in the 800 (2:06.39); Trevor Wagner, who placed fourth in the 110 hurdles; and Mason Polier, who was fourth in the shot with a personal-best throw of 48-2.

Other locals finishing strong in the Class 2 boys meet included:

• Gate City’s Michael Calhoun placing second in the shot put.

• Wise Central’s Maddox Reynolds winning the 110 hurdles and placing third in the 300 hurdles. Austin Yeary (1,600) and Andrew Deel (3,200) also placed for Central.

• Ridgeview’s 4×100 relay team finishing runner-up with a time of 43.8 and Isaac Lockhart placing second in both the 100 and 200.

• Virginia High’s Gavin Austin coming in fourth in the high jump.

BEARCATS’ HARRINGTON SHINES

Virginia High’s Kelsey Harrington set new standards for Class 2 female distance runners on Saturday.

Harrington broke the VHSL Class 2 records for both the 3,200 (10:38) and the 1,600 (4:57) in capturing gold in both events.

Samantha Jerrell placed fifth in the long jump and eighth in the 100 for Gate City, and teammate Riley Houseright — a freshman — placed sixth in the shot and eighth in the discus.

Wise Central’s Carlee Salyers was sixth in the 800 after running a PR and school-record time of 2:27.

Ridgeview multisport star Nikole Counts was fourth in the 400 and eighth in the high jump.

BIG DAY FOR SW VIRGINIA GIRLS IN CLASS 1

Several female athletes from Southwest Virginia had strong showings in the Class 1 track championships.

Patrick Henry won the team title after edging out defending state champion Auburn. Patrick Henry totaled 114 points and Auburn was the runner-up with 102.

J.I. Burton’s Lydia Blair-James was strong in the state finals again. She won her second straight championship in the 100 hurdles and added a gold medal this year with a win in the 300 hurdles. She also finished second in the high jump.

East Tennessee State signee Molly Rhudy won two events as well. The Chilhowie star won the 100 and took the long jump title with a jump of 17-7. She also placed third in the triple jump.

Chilhowie also got a third-place finish from its 4×400 relay team and a fifth from its 4×100 relay.

In the Class 1 boys meet, Holston’s Jordan Keith won the 800 with a time of 1:59 and finished second in the 1600.


REGION 2D SOFTBALL

LEBANON — Lebanon managed only three hits against Richlands ace Mac Osborne, but the Lady Pioneers needed only one.

Morgan Hamm smacked a fourth-inning solo home run over the left-field fence at Shelia Adams Field to lift Lebanon (18-7) to a 1-0 win over Richlands (20-5) for the Region 2D championship.

Both teams will play in the Class 2 tournament. In Tuesday’s state quarterfinals, Lebanon will host Dan River at 6 p.m. and Richlands will go to Floyd County.


REGION 2D BOYS SOCCER

BRISTOL, Va. — Graham scored three goals in the first five minutes and rolled to a 5-1 victory over Southwest District foe Richlands to claim the Region 2D championship at Sugar Hollow Park.

In the VHSL Class 2 quarterfinal round Tuesday, Graham will welcome Giles and Richlands will go to Martinsville.
