Running distance: Meet Greater Fall River’s All-Scholastic cross …  Fall River Herald News

FALL RIVER — When it comes to long-distance running, these athletes are simply the best in the business in Greater Fall River.

High school cross country runners completed their full season of distance running this past fall.

There was no quit throughout the 3-kilometer or 5-kilometer race for these athletes, who put forth solid individual efforts during each meet.

The Herald News is pleased to announce the 2022 Cross Country All-Scholastic teams from Greater Fall River high schools.

Male Runner of the Year

Diman cross country runner William Ferreira

William Ferreira, Diman

Ferreira had a season to remember for the Bengals in 2022, which is why he was named the 2022 Herald News male runner of the year. He was Diman’s top runner for the season, finishing as the team’s top runner in six out of six dual meets. Ferreira placed first overall against Durfee and Old Colony. His best performance was at the Mayflower Athletic Conference State Vocational Championship meet, where he ran a 18:22 on the 5K course. Ferreira was selected a Mayflower Athletic Conference All Star for finishing fourth in the MAC Large Division meet. He was also named Diman’s Team Most Valuable Player.

Female Runner of the Year

Maggie O’Connell, Durfee

O’Connell ended her junior season in style for the Hilltoppers, capturing her second straight Herald News female runner of the year. She had personal-best time of 20:09 after placing 45th out 138 runners in the Division 1A meet at Wrentham Developmental Center. O’Connell received Durfee’s team Most Valuable Player award. The Hilltopper distance runner had a time of 20:19 at the Southeast Conference meet and recorded a 20:33 against New Bedford. O’Connell is a league all-star.

Coach of the Year

Kyle Francoeur, Diman

First team

Emma Foley, Diman

Foley had a superb first season for the Bengals in 2022 … the sophomore runner helped the Bengals to a 6-0 record … finished eighth overall in the the Mayflower Athletic Large Conference championship meet … had a personal-best time of 23:39 for a 5k course … this is Foley’s first Herald News All-Scholastic honors.

Jack Hansen

Jack Hansen, Somerset Berkley

Hansen, a senior, had another remarkable year for the Raiders this past fall … he was named a South Coast Conference honorable mention … Hansen placed 15th overall in the league meet with a time of 18:23 … he also runs track and field in the winter months … this is Hansen’s second consecutive Herald News All-Scholastic honors.

Mya Martinez, Diman

Martinez, a sophomore captain, was one of the Bengals top runners this past fall … she was named a Mayflower Athletic Conference League All Star … Martinez was the top runner in three of six dual meets this season … she was awarded the team’s Most Valuable Player … finished seventh in the Mayflower Athletic Large Conference championship … had a personal-best time of 22:49 … helped the Bengals to a 6-0 record.

Eden McCausland, Diman

McCausland enjoyed a solid final season for the Bengals this fall … the Diman senior captain runner was named a Mayflower Athletic Conference League All Star … ran cross country for the first time this season … finished seventh in the MAC championship with a personal-best time of 24:28 … helped the Bengals to a 6-0 record … this is McCausland’s first Herald News All-Scholastic honor.

Inez Medeiros, Diman

Medeiros, a junior captain, had another terrific season for the Bengals in 2022 … helped the Bengals to a 6-0 record … Medeiros came in ninth in the Mayflower Athletic Conference Large championship meet … she finished the season with a personal best of 24:02 for a 5K … this is Medeiros’ second straight Herald News All-Scholastic honors.

Julia Rumsey, Durfee

Rumsey, an eighth grader, had a solid season for the Hilltoppers in 2022 …had a personal-best time of 22:59 at the Southeast Conference meet … she also ran a 23:09 against league opponent Bridgewater-Raynham … Rumsey finished with a time of 24:03 against Dartmouth … this is Rumsey’s first Herald News All-Scholastic honors.

Tyler Scanlon

Tyler Scanlon, Somerset Berkley

Scanlon completed a solid year for the Raiders during the fall season in 2022 … the senior runner was named a South Coast Conference honorable mention … had a personal-best time of 18:35 on the 5K course … took 23rd overall in the South Coast Conference meet with a time of 19:08 … this is Scanlon’s first Herald News All-Scholastic appearance after a second team honor in 2021.
