Redondo’s girls track team continued to show its strength last Saturday with six 1st-place finishes at the Mustang Relays held on the campus of Mira Costa High School.

Distance runners from both schools will compete Saturday in the Azusa Pacific University Meet of Champions. The remainder of Mira Costa’s squad with participate in the Woodbridge Invitational that same day while other Redondo athletes prepare for the Trabuco Hills Invitational to be held Friday and Saturday, Mar. 29-30.

Redondo’s relay teams continued to excel at the Mustang Relays, capturing the 4×100 (48.44), 4×200 (1:42.66) and Distance Medley Relay (1:22.80). The Sea Hawks also placed second in the 4×800 race with a time of 9:47.72.

Peyton Heiden won the 1600 with a time of 5 minutes, 15.59 seconds.

“The 1600 I ran last weekend was a solid race,” Heiden said. “I was very happy with my win, but with every race, I believe there is always something that I can learn. I was hoping to run a little bit faster, but I’m gonna let the process do it’s thing; stick to my training and focus on all of the one percents: hydration, nutrition, plenty of sleep, and a clear mind. The atmosphere at Mustang Relays was fantastic and taking the win made it even better.”

Redondo’s Amari Turner won the pole vault (12-00) and Mahkaia Lee captured the long jump title.

“All of our handoffs for the relays were solid and I think we all ran well,” Lee said. “The long jump was frustrating for me because I missed the board for two jumps but after I took corrections from my coaches and cleared my head I came out and performed and jumped a season best mark at 18 feet, 6.5 inches for the win.”

Other Sea Hawks to finish in the top three included long jumper Katherine Kluver, who placed second with a mark of 18-05, and third-place finishers Amber Autry (100, 12.42) and olly Ann Hastings (1600, 5:22.26).

Mira Costa was led by Amari Frasier who won the 300 hurdles (45.82) and placed second in the 100 hurdles (15.23).

The Mustangs also won the 4×400 relay (4:02.57) and placed third in the 4×800 (10:21.29) and Distance Medley Relay (12:46.36). Alyssa Toyooka placed third in the shot put (29-07.5).

West Torrance high jumper Mia Beresford won with a mark of 5-00 and the Warrior’s 4×200 relay team placed third (1:49.15).

In boys competition, Peninsula’s Aiden Lieb enjoyed three first-place finishes capturing the 110 hurdles (14.79), 300 hurdles (40.78) and long jump (22-01.75).

West High’s Kyten Arthur won the pole event with a mark of 14 feet.

Redondo placed second in the Distance Medley Relay (10:38.45) and the high jump when Justin Yaskowitz cleared 6-02.

Mira Costa pole vaulter Andrew Sandberg was runner-up in the pole vault with a mark of 13-06 and two Mustang relays teams finished third in the 4×200 (1:33.68) and Distance Medley Relay (10:40.43).

Peninsula shot putter Carlos Ocegueda placed second (45-06.5) and Kazuma Takahashi was third in the 110 hurdles (15.54).

Other second-place finishers include South’s Hayden Johnson (1600, 4:29.62) and Lawndale’s Isaac Muanza (triple jump, 42-01).

Third-place honors went to North’s Chase Mataalii (discus, 113-07.5) and Vincent Puellas (shot put, 44-02), South’s Nick Chan (pole vault, 6-0) and West’s Ichiroh Rodriguez (high jump, 6-0).
