Long Island running clubs, teams and running related businesses have gotten together to launch the new Long Island Running Series.

The series highlights the beauty of Long Island towns and parks and features 25 races, 13 in Nassau County and 12 in Suffolk County. It includes both the Long Island Marathon/Half Marathon and the Suffolk Marathon/Half Marathon as well as the Great South Bay Half Marathon, the Great Cow Harbor, Shelter Island and Aspire 10-Kilometer races, the Kings Park 15-Kilometer Run, and a variety of shorter distance road and cross-country races in Nassau and Suffolk.

All eyes in the Long Island running community are now focused on the Lazer, Aptheker, Rosella and Yedid Kings Park 15-Kilometer Run, which will serve as the first major race of the new series on March 23.

The Long Island Running Series is highlighted by the Nassau/Suffolk Challenge in which individuals and teams will be competing for top honors in each county. There will be separate individual awards for age group winners in each county, prize money for top teams overall and a special trophy and bragging rights to the top team in each county. Even if an individual is competing only in the individual competition, he or she must be a member of a club or team. This will add to the spirit and camaraderie of competition.

The key sponsor of the new Long Island Running Series is Jonas Chiropractic Sports Injury Care, who has helped the running community deal with various overuse and repetitive injuries and served as the financial support for many running related causes over the years. Support also comes from the Runners Edge in Farmingdale and the Sayville/Smithtown Running Company.

The Long Island Running Series has started as a joint effort by the Greater Long Island Running Club, Northport Running Club, Massapequa Road Runner Club, Selden Hills Warriors, North Country Road Warriors, Long Island Road Runners Club, RaceAwesome, New Hyde Park/Mineola Running Club, Nassau Police Running Club, Super Runners Shop and We Are Athletes.

Northport Running Club President John Despagna of the Northport Running Club will serve as the initial president of Long Island Running Series, Inc., which will be managing the new series. Regina Orelli of Northport and Lesli Hiller of the Nassau Police Running Club will serve as vice presidents, Jill Skelly of Team Runners Edge/LITC will be secretary and Sue Polansky of the Greater Long Island Running Club will serve as treasurer.

“We are thrilled to have established a competitive racing series on Long Island that is by and for runners. Both individuals and teams will be able to benefit from the ability to test themselves in the best races Long Island has to offer,” said John Despagna.
