there is no rushing the process

I did not officially start longer distance running until about two years ago. My background has been mostly active and I was a Division II triple jumper/sprinter in college. After college I wanted to stay in shape so I ran and worked out but usually just a few miles here and there. I ran some 5Ks for fun and a 10K here and there but I always assumed I was not built for longer distances because it was so uncomfortable.

This idea, that we are built for one thing and not the other has bothered me a lot over the years. I became determined to see if I could actually make my body run these longer distances and not be miserable. I signed up for my first half-marathon and went through a training cycle with a friend that has a lot of experience. I became hooked and wanted to keep going. Running has changed me. Through the hours and hours of running I have come to learn that there is no rushing the process. No skipping steps. And every step I take is a building block toward the foundation of becoming a better runner. It has taught me patience. It has taught me that I can stay in discomfort for quite a long time and I won’t die. It has taught me that I am capable of much more than I previously thought. It has taught me that even if you do the work and don’t reach the goal, the work is what I really love anyway.

Why I joined RW+

I joined RW+ to connect with the community of runners. I love the profiles and stories. I also like the access to coaching tips and supportive training that is offered.

The feeling of accomplishment and rush of addictive endorphins are immediately gratifying

I run for so many reasons but one of the main motivators for me is how I feel after every, single run. Long, short, recovery, tempo. The feeling of accomplishment and rush of addictive endorphins are immediately gratifying. If I am having a tough day and don’t feel like running, I always lace up and just say to myself: walk out the door. You don’t have to run, just walk, but get out the door. Once I do, I inevitably run and I never regret it. Ever.

Where I feel at home

I am a morning runner for sure. Lunchtime at the latest. It is when my energy both mentally and physically are best. I love to run on this trail in the bay area called Sawyer Camp Trail on a reservoir called Crystal Springs. It is just over six miles out and back and completely dedicated to runners and bikers. I love the peacefulness and quiet. There are always little packs of deer that will be crossing or running into the bushes and gorgeous foliage with rolling hills that change the further I run. It is the place I go most often and where I feel at home.

Favorite gear

The single piece of gear I cannot live without would be my Garmin 235 Forerunner. I load my workouts, watch my paces and record everything with this watch.
