HUNDREDS of doctors, nurses and supporters laced up for the Wishlist Fun Run this morning to top a stellar week of fundraising for the local charity.

About 400 runners raised $20,000 through entry fees and donations to ensure Sunshine Coast patients and their families got the “very best health care” via the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services.

Wishlist spokeswoman Jasmine Hodges said the community had continued to show its support for a cause close to everyone’s heart, and the charity was impressed by the number of local business teams who entered this year’s fun run.

She commended corporate team Studio Collectors, who raised the most money at $880 on top of their entry fees.

The morning’s event began when the 10km runners hit the track at 7.20am, followed by the 5km runners, 5km family walk and the kids dash around Lake Kawana, Bokarina.

Ms Hodges said this morning’s event was a general fundraiser, and the “bigger project” at the moment was The House The Coast Built, plus purchasing some “vital equipment”.

The slab has been laid for the house within walking distance of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital to give families access to local affordable family accommodation while their loved ones undergo treatment, surgery or emergency stays.

The Federal Government, in partnership with Wishlist and the Ronald McDonald House charities, announced Friday it would contribute half of the estimated $24 million to build an eight-storey facility for family accommodation in the Sunshine Coast Health Foundation Accommodation Hub, to be built in Birtinya.

The proposed eight-storey facility will include low to no cost family accommodation as well as 1000sqm of community facilities.

“We have had a very successful fundraising week for Wishlist,” Ms Hodges said this morning.

“Our next major event on the Sunshine Coast is the Wishlist Spring Carnival in September, that’s a massive event.

Last year’s sold-out, 10th anniversary carnival raised more than $120,000.
