And with just days to go until the big day, Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon Ambassador Leanne Moore says runners should now be focusing on eating a ‘clean diet and drinking lots of water’ rather than clocking up the miles.

She said: “First and foremost, make sure your food is bang on every day. Eat as cleanly as you possibly can, and try and steer clear of processed foods and takeaways.

“I know that will be very hard come Friday and Saturday nights especially but it will really stand to you if you really fill up on good, solid nutrition in the days leading up the event.

“Also make sure you’re hitting your water every day from now on, a minimum of two litres of water per day. The last thing for the last few days is not to overdo the exercise.

SHORTER RUNS

“If you’ve been following the training plan, you’ll see it’s all about the shorter runs this week. It’s literally just to get the legs moving, it’s not for time, or pace or any of those things.

“Just get the legs moving and try steer clear of any leg weight sessions of HIIT sessions that’s going to slow you down on the day that will make you feel heavy or lethargic. Keep the training light from now on until Sunday. I would definitely be resting on Friday and Saturday if possible.”

On race day, Leanne says stick to food you know and don’t introduce new meals on the morning of the race.

Despite being a personal trainer, the 34-year-old Limerick woman admits running a 10k will be a challenge for her too.

RELISHED TRAINING

But she’s relished training for the race as she uses the time when she’s running to plan her upcoming destination wedding.

Leanne – who is set to tie the knot with her fiancé David Behan in Marbella in July – said: “I haven’t run in quite a number of years for that distance. People think because I’m a trainer, I’m running 10ks every week but that’s definitely not the case. It will be a challenge for me too but I’m excited about it.

“I’m getting married in six weeks’ time and because it’s away, it’s a little bit more tricky so running has been fantastic for me.

“I’ve found it so helpful because it’s given me the time to say ‘ok I need to do this, this and this,’ but also sometimes, it gives me the time to just be like ‘ok, I cannot think of another thing.’ I just put on a playlist and away I go.”

The Irish Sun are backing Team Barnardos for the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon, and there’s still time to join the team and help support some of Ireland’s most vulnerable children.

Leanne says every cent counts when it comes to fundraising but she’s urging runners to enjoy the day too.

She added: “Every small little thing that everyone does is a step in the right direction. Don’t be putting pressure on yourself, you’re doing this out of the goodness of your heart and that’s fantastic. That’s the vibe for the day, stay positive and enjoy it.”
