The tenth annual Stokes Feed 5K and Half Marathon race drew record numbers to King’s Central Park despite cold and rainy weather on Saturday.

Organizers said the racers beat the 2016 mark of 363 participants with 368 this year, while collecting more than 4,500 cans of food that will be distributed over the three Stokes County food pantries.

“It was an awesome day,” said race organizer Angie Bailey. “The race continues to grow and it’s not from lack of effort from the team that has been here for 10 years. I think the Jock Lloyd challenge, the team challenge, and the master of cans has definitely increased participation today. It’s supported by the schools and the county and just really excited that we had people from all over the U.S. We had a participant sign up from Utah on Friday, so it’s been awesome.”

Bailey has been helping with the event over the past six years, but the original organizers of Renee and Zollie Smith, Gerard Moore, and Eddie Marshall were out supporting the event in full force with Zollie Smith being the master of ceremony.

This was the first year of the team challenge where the largest team wins the title and a trophy. Popular Springs Elementary School took home the prize and also they were the winner of the “Master of the Cans,” where the team who collected the most canned food wins.

The Jock Lloyd Challenge was added a few years ago in an effort to increase awareness of helping the community while promoting running as a part of a healthy lifestyle.

Lloyd, a former South Stokes High School teacher, was an avid runner who became known nationally for running long distances and competing in rigorous races. The day included a challenge, a competition for all Stokes County schools, not for distance or speed but for participation. It’s designed to count students or staff from each school as a percentage of the school population so every school has an equal chance to win the Jock Lloyd Challenge trophy.

Germanton Elementary edged out Poplar Springs and won it for a second consecutive year with 11 schools participating throughout the county. Walnut Ridge Assisted Living presented the school a check for $250.

The King Rotary Club once again provided a free pancake breakfast after the race to runners and volunteers while being entertained by a live DJ.

Organizers recognized the three top overall runners for male and female in the 5K and half marathon. They also gave a medal and recognition to the top three in eight different age brackets.

West Stokes junior Zachary Watts was the male overall 5K winner with a time of 17:53.91. Teammate TJ Magaraci was less than 30-seconds behind him with Mason Rudel placing third. The female winner was 11-year-old Anna Edwards from Shady Grove Elementary School in Davie County. Finishing second was Shanna Spainhour followed by Laura Pulliam.

More than 70 children younger than 14 ran the race. In the male completion Joshua Rice finished first, Cole Know second, and Jude Moorefield third. Lily White of Piney Grove was first in the female race with King First Baptist Church’s Campbell Orr placing second, and Eden Nickelston third.

Other winners included: Desiree Shields, Lydia Stevens, Rachel Claffee (female 15-19 years old), Cameron Knox, Matthew Moutos, Ethan Lillycrop (male 15-19 years old), Stephanie Cain, Taylor Furgalack, Olivia Smith (female 20-29 years old), William Jessup, Taylor Calloway, Marcos Rangel Salmerson (male 20-29 years old), Megan Manuel, Amber Collier, Amanda Cagle (female 30-39 years old), Justin Akers, Dario Saldna, Joshua McKnight (male 30-39 years old), Abby Knox, Lisa Moore, Lauren Dudley (female 40-49 years old), Brian Rudel, Anthony Harris, Travis Konst (male 40-49 years old), Beth Lillycrop, Pam Lisk, Lynn Hunter (female 50-59 years old), Richard Ellis, Benny Lisk, Tyndall Alligood (male 50-59 years old), Elizabeth Brown, Karen Gilley, Denise Davis (female 60-69 years old), Richard Ferguson, Rick Bachmeyer, Tommy Fansler (male 60-69 years old), Marlene McCraw, Verna S.
