ST. LOUIS, MO. — Some Central College track and field distance runners started off the outdoor season by running at the Washington University (Mo.) Distance Carnival on Friday night.

Over 200 men ran the 5,000-meter race and just under 100 entered the 10,000-meter run. On the women’s side, over 150 women did the 5K and 50 did the 10K. Athletes came from schools all over the Midwest and beyond.

“This was a very talented of runners that our athletes were running in tonight,” associate head coach Joe Dunham said. “I was proud of how hard they competed but it also showed them how much work they still need to put in.

Men’s races

In the 10,000-meter run, Daniel Sunvold (junior, Monroe, Southeast Polk HS) was the top finisher for Central in 58th place with a time of 33 minutes, 17.95 seconds. Easton Sabala (freshman, Wheatland, Mo., Hermitage HS) was right behind him in 33:20.83 and 59th place.

“I was happy with Daniel’s lifetime PR,” Dunham said. “Easton looked really, really good. It’s good to see a little bit of his old self back after dealing with a lot of injuries during the indoor season. I’m looking forward to seeing some good development from him.”

Jeremy Fopma’s (freshman, Marion) 5,000-meter time of 15:23.28 was 46th overall to lead the pack for Central.

Women’s races

Freshman Rayanne Dally (freshman, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) clocked in at 47:01.25 in the first 10,000-meter run of her career. She placed 47th.

“I thought Rayanne competed really hard today,” Dunham said “It was her first ever 10K and it was exciting to see her progress through the race and get faster as she went. I think she gained a lot of confidence from the weekend.”

Miranda Kruiswyk (freshman, Dunlap, Ill.) was Central’s best 5,000-meter runner in a time of 18:31.45. She cracked the top 50, registering the 49th-best time.

Central’s throwers will participate in the Viking Olympics Saturday in Rock Island, Illinois.
