Often referred to as the “Netflix of fitness,” Peloton has taken the home exercise world by storm over the past few years with its top-rated home exercise bike. While boasting a lofty price tag, the Peloton bike quickly became a beloved piece of home gym equipment for fitness enthusiasts and casual exercisers alike, thanks to its wide array of integrative features and class offerings. Now, with the release of the Peloton Tread, the Silicon Valley company aims to captivate the hearts of runners, too – literally and figuratively.

Like its predecessor, the Tread goes above and beyond the standard piece of exercise equipment, with thousands of motivational live workout videos and on-demand classes featured within its HD Touch Display. And like its predecessor, it doesn’t come cheap.

So to ensure you invest wisely in this premium treadmill, we decided to take it for a test run – see what we did there? Here’s what we found.

Peloton Tread

The Review

First things first: The Peloton Tread is not a compact piece of equipment. The frame measures 6’ x 3’ x 6’ (HWD) and it weighs in at about 455 pounds. The Peloton team is helpful when it comes to set-up, sticking around to cover any additional questions you may have but you’ll need to make sure your home has a decent amount of space before ordering the Tread – and keep proximity to your WiFi router in mind, too.

Apart from its grand structure, the Tread looks quite similar to a standard treadmill. The upper design is sleek and user-friendly, with the right handlebar featuring speed controls, the left featuring incline and the middle featuring power, stop and sleep buttons. Where the Tread truly stands out – appearance wise – is in its dynamic screen. The 32-inch touch display is vibrant and bright and features a built-in camera so you can connect with friends participating in the same workouts. In terms of sound offerings, the Tread has a high capacity soundbar in addition to a headphone jack and USB port.

When it comes to setting up the Tread, the process is easy and intuitive. After pressing the power button and tapping your profile you will see a number of tabs:

1. Featured: Most popular classes

2. Classes: On-demand classes based on workout types (ie. cycling, running, yoga etc)

3. Schedule: Upcoming live classes

4. Programs: Peloton specific programs such as total body strength or run to 5K

5. Challenges: Join challenges with other Peloton users and compare progress

6. More: Account info, subscription preferences, and more details about Peloton merchandise and instructors

You can search for classes based on a number of things including music, instructor, difficulty and time. There are at least eight live workout classes per day but you can select an on-demand class at any time.

While running, you can choose to see your metrics or not. The standard metrics include average pace, calorie burn count, speed, incline, distance and energy output, in addition to the time elapsed. And, for extra motivation, you can choose to see a leaderboard during classes, where participants rankings show up on the screen in real time.

The Peloton subscription includes access to all classes, but the runs without class input are just as enjoyable. Thanks to the advanced technology and vibrant screen you can immerse yourself on a beach or a Swiss mountainside at the push of the screen.

The Peloton Tread is a lot quieter than the typical treadmill and it feels great under the feet while walking or running. It is designed to be shock absorbent so users can have a low impact training experience.

There are a few pricing options for the Tread,  all include a $300 delivery and setup fee, and a come with a one-year warranty. 24-month financing is also available.

  • Basics Package: $4,295 (or $179 per month) the Tread alone
  • Essentials Package: $4,524 ($189 per month) one set of resistance bands, two pairs of free weights and an exercise mat
  • Works Package: $4,644 ($194 per month) includes a pair of custom JBL wireless earbuds and a glass water bottle in addition to the Essentials accessories
  • Family Package: $4,844 ($202 per month) one set of resistance bands, three pairs of free weights, an exercise mat, two pairs of wireless earbuds, two glass water bottles, and a chest strap heart rate monitor.

No matter what package you select, you will need to pay $39 per month for Peloton’s subscription service to use the Tread (if you pay upfront, the first month is included in the cost). With that, you will get unlimited access to live and on-demand classes and the Peloton app.

You can also subscribe to the app for $19.49 per month and access on-demand classes on a regular treadmill.

What Stood Out: The Variety of Workouts and Music Integration

The class offerings and entertainment-like features of the Tread are what takes it above and beyond the standard treadmill. While I love to run outside, I personally get pretty bored running on a typical treadmill – as I’m sure many others do, too. But the Tread’s dynamic set-up provides an entirely different experience. The way instructors integrate music into the classes to alter the difficulty and pace keeps you on your toes and helps you avoid checking the clock.

While you might think the Tread is strictly reserved for running/walking, Peloton offers a wide range of strength training classes, too. Yoga and strength training classes are available to follow on the screen from a mat or on the Tread at times, too.

The Verdict: Great Product at a High Price

The biggest drawback of the Peloton is, of course, its price. However, if you have the budget and the space, this piece is sure to help motivate you to keep up your workout routine. The variety of classes, settings and music options makes for an invigorating workout experience and the fact that you can do it at home without worrying about getting to the gym makes it even better.
