Fergus Cullen running for re-election to Dover City Council  Foster’s Daily Democrat

The following candidate announcement was submitted by Fergus Cullen. Local election announcements may be emailed to news@fosters.com.

Fergus Cullen is running for a second term on the Dover City Council in Ward 6, the northern part of the city.

“I bring a fiscally conservative voice representing Dover taxpayers to the Council,” Cullen said.

Dover adopted budgets within the tax cap both years since Cullen joined the Council. Previous councils overrode the tax cap and raised taxes five years in a row.

Dover is the fastest-growing city in New Hampshire over the past 20 years. That growth provides more resources to fund schools, improve infrastructure, and provide services without needing exorbitant tax increases.

“The Dover School District has never had as much funding as it does now,” Cullen pointed out. This year’s budget increased school funding by about $2 million while staying within the tax cap. “The school budget was not cut. It increased. All we did was reduce the rate of spending increase to that allowed by the tax cap,” Cullen said.

“Things are on the right track in Dover. Property values are up and our downtown is vibrant. But we need to stay vigilant about keeping Dover affordable and holding the line on taxes. We can do that with manageable growth and budgets that stay within the tax cap,” Cullen said.

Cullen’s professional experience includes having worked as Chief Financial Officer at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, where he led construction of the school’s new $2.4 million athletics facility, and in county government.

Cullen coaches high school distance runners in track & field and cross country. Fergus and his wife, Jenny Cullen, founded the annual Horne Street School 5K, helping raise more than $62,000 for the school’s parent teacher group over the eight years they directed the event.

The Cullens have three children in Dover schools. Fergus is a graduate of Gilford (NH) High, Yale College, and Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
