Runners can be rather choosy about their kit. One runner’s favourite go-faster carbon-plated trainers might give another blood blisters, while one’s energy gel of choice might make another’s stomach turn. This means that, unfortunately, runners tend to end up in the hard-to-shop-for section of our Christmas lists.
But panic not – it’s still possible to find the perfect Christmas gift for the pavement pounder in your life, whether they’re tackling their first Couch to 5K or chasing marathon medals.
HUAWEI’S WATCH GT 3 lets runners track their progress and check their pace and heart rate as they move. It also offers the ability to pre-programme interval workouts and boasts features such as Route Back, which can guide you if you get lost.
We caught up with long-distance Olympian Sir Mo Farah – who’s partnered with Huawei to launch the WATCH GT 3 – to find out all the benefits of tracking your health with a smartwatch.
Accurate heart-rate monitoring
The WATCH GT 3 offers detailed and accurate heart-rate monitoring – this is mainly due to its clever arched base design, which keeps the watch snug and secure on your wrist. On the back, the redesigned sensor packs eight photodiodes in a circular layout, along with two light sources, to precisely scan your wrist – allowing the watch to not only track your heartbeat but also your blood-oxygen levels, step count, skin temperature and over 100 workouts.
‘As an elite athlete, I constantly have to ask myself, “What is my body doing; what is it telling me?” Understanding that is important, as it dictates the training I do,’ explains Mo.
‘The WATCH GT 3 gives me incredibly accurate data all through the day – from basic things like my heart rate and number of steps to really incredible things such as my blood oxygen levels and the quality of my sleep, which is so important for recovery.’
Durable battery life and wireless charging
We all know that dreaded feeling when you’re about to head out the door for a run and you realise your watch has died – it’s the worst. One of the best things about HUAWEI’s WATCH GT 3? It’s battery life.
In fact, we’d go as far as to say it offers the best battery life on any smartwatch – with up to 14 days of use on a single charge under normal usage (so you can track your sleep too). It also uses fancy wireless charging, so topping up your watch’s battery is super simple if you forget your charger, as you can just use your phone. This means, for short weekend trips, you won’t even need to worry about bringing a charger with you.
‘It’s really amazing that I can track all of this data, all day, from a watch that also looks great and has amazing battery life. I used to find it annoying to have to charge my old watch every day,’ says Mo.
Personal AI Running Coach
Like working to a targeted running programme but don’t want to fork out for a PT? Well, the HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 looks at all your data and assesses your athletic ability, and then provides you with a scientific and professional plan (based on your data) to help you achieve your running goals with ease.
Of course, a professional runner like Mo has access to some of the top running coaches in the world, but whether you’re just starting out on coach to 5k or aiming to complete your 10th marathon, having a truly personalised training programme – that adjusts itself automatically depending on how much you train – could be just the key to keeping accountable (and smashing those PBs).
100+ workout modes
Even the best runners don’t spend all their time running – and we know it’s good for us to switch our routine up every now and again. The WATCH GT 3 has more than 100 different sport modes – so whether you’re running, cycling, hiking or swimming, it will track it all.
Sets daily goals
If you’re the sort of person who needs to be reminded to drink water throughout the day (and take breaks away from the laptop), the WATCH GT 3 sets daily goals and thoughtful reminders to help you develop healthier habits. It even reminds you to smile.
‘Staying motivated and positive is one of the most difficult things as a runner – at any level – but this watch has a few features to help keep you on track day to day. For example, I’m really enjoying the Healthy Clover function, which lets me set reminders and goals to ensure I stay active enough through the day; things such as getting the right amount of sleep and drinking enough water,’ says Mo.
‘It’s little things you could easily otherwise forget to do as well as you could, and that may leave you feeling like you haven’t achieved as much as you need to if you’re training towards a specific goal.’
