Brad Cox’s barn continues to have success with its 3-year-olds as Tawny Port becomes the most recent stakes winner, taking home the Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby on Saturday.

Fast fractions set by longshot Pineapple Man dueling with third-place-finisher Classic Causeway set up nicely for Tawny Port’s late run over the Thistledown dirt track. Going 1 1/8 miles, it was White Abarrio who made the first move, passing the front-runners, but Irad Ortiz Jr. and Tawny Port swung wide and powered to the wire to win by one length over White Abarrio.

On June 12, Cox won the Matt Winn at Churchill Downs with Cyberknife. Seven days later, it was the Pegasus at Monmouth Park with Home Brew. He does it again with Tawny Port, paying $4.60 as the favorite

It was jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.’s first call to ride Tawny Port, and the Ohio Derby win was his third on the day.
