Event organisers have to cater for runnerswho increasingly want to socialise during and after races.

April and May have seen the return of some larger races, including Two Oceans and the first of the Absa Run Your City 10 km series. This is augmented by an increasing number of club events, all of which is encouraging for the sport.

Our South African structure, the envy of many countries, is based around club races that create their own income from races, while the 10% (to 15%) of entry fee augments the annual license to finance provincial athletics.

The sponsorship of that license, together with TV rights, serves as the primary income for national federation. Athletics, therefore, survives on athletics competition.
